Laos Mekong

Swift commercial development along the Mekong River in Laos has brought improvements and better access for tourists. This means international visitors can now visit more destinations and cities like Luang Prabang have quickly become important tourist attractions with world class accommodation and excellent dining options. The incredible natural surroundings, distinctive local culture and fascinating history of the Mekong region make Laos a popular travel destination for people with a wide range of interests at different budget levels.

The two principle cities in Laos both look out over the Mekong River. Vientiane, the capital, is a relaxed place compared to other cities in Asia, but still a bustling metropolis in relation to the smaller towns and villages that still form the major part of the country. Vientiane's riverside location, historical buildings, temples and fine monuments make this a excellent place to begin a trip to Laos. The streets in some parts of the city are lined with French colonial buildings, many of which have been converted into hotels and restaurants, giving it a well established European ambience.

Luang Prabang is another of the Mekong region's most attractive, historical cities. Laos' second city was once itself a capital during the kingdom of Lan Xang, which existed from the 14th to the 18th century. It is now the country's top tourist destination, well known for its beautiful, gilded temples, practising monks, and striking colonial buildings. The pace of life has increased since tourism became a major part of the economy Luang Prabang, but it remains a relatively calm retreat, surrounded by some of the most spectacular views and countryside in the region.

Beyond the main cities, the popular riverside destination of Vang Vieng has become a favourite destination for budget travellers in recent years. They gather there to relax, share travel stories and party the night away surrounded by brooding limestone cliffs and deep untainted forests. Thanks to its new found popularity with younger travellers, Vang Vieng now boasts a wide range of activities that includes caving and tubing down the river. Many visitors choose to stay longer than planned in Vang Vieng and although the town has become something of a tourist capital and is therefore less traditional than other locations, it is still an attractive place to visit and enjoy some down time in the countryside.
