Mekong Boat

Travelling by boat on the Mekong River is a memorable trip. In Laos, you travel through untouched mountain scenery, where nature continues to flourish and the spectacular unspoilt surroundings embrace you. A Mekong boat cruise leaves you spell bound. Watched over by grand peaks and forested foothills, the murky waters of the Mekong meander their way south from China all the way through Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and into Thailand. Every day brings changes to the landscape on a boat trip along the Mekong. Limestone Karsts reach from the ground to the skies, trees clinging to their peaks as they battle to survive. Vegetation seems to grow straight from solid rock, while the river obliviously winds its way through the land, unstoppable and undisturbed, totally beyond any human distractions. Passengers keen on wildlife can spot a good variety of rare and fascination creatures along the river's banks, as well as lurking beneath its flowing waters. Giant river fish occasionally come to the surface, while majestic birds of prey swoop from the skies in search of a feed and all manner of land of species are drawn to the riverbank, scrambling down to cool off and drink.

The Mekong also sustains a vast human population. Mooring at villages to witness the local way of life, you feel instantly welcome and are often asked to join village festivities and celebrations, which happen regularly. The villagers along the Mekong live as they always have, defining their days with community gatherings to celebrate births and marriages, pay respect to their elders or seek spiritual guidance. On festivals days, they never miss a chance to gather and enjoy a little escape from the hardships of subsistence. They happily share their food, drink and stories and throw themselves into the celebration with enthusiasm. All along the river, the people have an air of dignity and peace. The legendary gentle, smiling hospitality is known throughout the region and often mentioned as one of the Laos' defining assets. No-one seems to hurry or get anxious, their methodical approach to life offers a worthy contrast to the chaotic lifestyle so many people have become accustomed to in other parts of the world. A boat trip along the Mekong can be an extremely calming experience, a journey that teaches you to appreciate life's simpler pleasures.
