Mekong Region

The natural splendour, compelling history and rich cultural diversity of the Mekong region attracts thousands of visitors every year. Recent improvements in terms of both access and tourism infrastructure has inspired something of a boom in the region, especially in countries like Laos where the number of visitors is constantly growing. International organisations like UNESCO and the World Trade Organization have all helped promote Laos and the Mekong as a destination. Thanks to careful planning and management, tourist arrivals can have so far had a positive effect on the development of the region by preserving environmental, cultural and human resources, while at the same time providing new sources of income for local people.

As tourism continues to grow, new destinations are coming to light both on along the Mekong River and in the hinterland that surrounds it. Luang Prabang has developed into the country's main tourist destination, but further south, an area known as the ‘Four Thousand Islands’ appears ready to to develop into a major tourist attraction for visitors from around the world. The islands are set on an incredibly picturesque stretch of the Mekong River with Don Khong and Don Dhet becoming the most popular islands thanks to the range of facilities on offer there, which includes choices for accommodation and food. Close to these islands, other attractions include some challenging rapids that are ideal for rafting and the Khon Phapheng waterfall, which occurs at the point where the Mekong drops in elevation close to the Cambodian border.

Rural life is also one now of the region's main attractions. The simple beauty of the Mekong is in sharp contrast to the pace and complexity of most people's lives in the west. Laos boasts hundreds of rustic riverside villages along the Mekong and many of these these are now mooring points for cruise boats such as those operated by Mekong Cruises. Some of these boast resemble hotels inside and offer both longer and shorter trips along the river. Local villagers now earn an extra income from tourism, providing food and activities for passengers, while also acting as local guides on treks and tours into the hinterland. Cruising the Mekong in Laos is a unique, enjoyable experience and tourism is therefore gradually becoming an important part of the country's economy. Visitor interest also helps protect the human and natural environment along Asia's most impressive river.

The growth in eco tourism and adventure sports is another factor along the Mekong River. Kayaking, hiking and mountain biking are all popular pass times in Laos, either on and close to the river. Eco lodges such as the comfortable such as the Luang Say Lodge near the town of Pakbeng are also springing up, which means visitors can stay close to nature. For the true Mekong experience, a cruise aboard a converted ferry boat like the Vat Phou blends luxury facilities with access to remote natural wonders. The comfortable cabins, open air decks and fine food create a relaxed sense of privileged exploration as you cruise through breathtaking natural surroundings.
